Environmental Issues

Gully Erosion in the Rain Forest belt of Nigeria

Environmental Problems in the Savannah Areas of Nigeria.

Pollution from oil related activities in the mangrove areas of Nigeria.

The examples in some states like Anambra and Edo where homes and farms are being lost as a result of gullies, underscores the seriousness of the dangers of the environmental menace to the people.

Overcoming gully erosion demands  a staggering and consistent financial commitments that cannot be shouldered by governments alone.

Flooding, drought and desertification, heat stress, disease/epidemics, declining soil fertility and conflicts are among the major environmental  and climate change impacts in  the savannah region of Nigeria.

Climate change mitigation and adaptation programmes are necessary in addressing these impacts and stabilizing the environment for sustained socio-economic growth.

Overcoming or minimizing the problem of oil pollution demands proper enforcement of environmental laws and good legislations.

There is also the need for improved security surveillance to control the activities of oil pipeline vandals.

The best approach to HIV/AIDS prevention is through the ABC message. for Abstinence, B for Be faithful and C for consistent condom use.

 Governance

For good governance to be entrenched in the Nigerian nation, the issue of credible elections and transparency  in running governance are paramount.  Nigerians expect the new president, Goodluck Jonathan to ensure credible elections in 2011 and revive the fight against corruption.
