Greenwatch Initiative has
recorded a number of successes in all thematic areas.
Environment and climate
change:
Since registration in 2005,
Greenwatch Initiative has worked extensively in the area
of environmental sustainability and climate change. The
first project was the climate change abatement programme
for institutions, organizations and individuals in Benue state. The aim was to contribute to the global
efforts in combating the devastating impact of climate
change on humanity.

Activities so far implemented
include; sensitization seminars for tertiary
institutions and rural communities, community forestry
practice, production and airing of climate friendly
radio jingles on radio Benue, production and population
wide circulation of climate friendly posters, constant
radio discussion sessions on Radio Benue, advocacy
visits to government institutions and organizations in
Benue State, the national assembly and Federal ministry
of environment. The latest development in this thematic
area is the receipt of grant in 2009 for the
implementation of the Building Nigeria Response to
Climate change (BNRCC) pilot project in Daudu (Guinea
savannah) and Falgore ( Sudan savannah) from CIDA
through the project managers; NEST/CUSO-VSO/MARBEK. The
project involves increasing resilience to climate change
vulnerabilities of the target communities through
diversification of livelihood options that are community
driven, gender sensitive, increase awareness on climate
change in the community, reduce vulnerability to climate
change and lead to adaptation. The 2- year project is
being successfully implemented in the two project
communities in Guinea (DAUDU) and Sudan (FALGORE)
savannah regions of Nigeria.
Water and Sanitation
Greenwatch Initiative
partnered with Water-AID Makurdi and BENGONET in
implementing the Community- led total sanitation project
in 3 LGAs of Benue state and Budget tracking of water
sector projects in 3 LGAs of Benue state in 2009.
Health information and
services
In the health sector, the
organization has worked to encourage the less privileged
in the society to develop behavioral and altitudinal
change towards their high risk activities that make them
vulnerable to HIV/AIDs. The first intervention in this
focus was the Global Fund
Tuberculosis
Round 5 (TB)/HIV 1st quarter prevention and control
project in Cross River State. The Organization was
contracted as Sub- Sub- Recipient of the Global Fund
with a small grant in February 2007, for advocacy, mobilization and
sensitization on TB treatment and HIV/AIDS prevention.
The target groups were women, out of school youths,
traditional/religious leaders, transport workers and
commercial sex workers. The result was increased
patient enrollment in the TB tests/DOTS programme in
Obudu and Anantiga Communities in Cross River State. The
HIV/AIDS prevention activities for commercial sex
workers and out of school youths also recorded
significant successes with significant reduction in
risky behavior among target groups in Obudu and
Anantigha in Cross River State.
In August 2008, Greenwatch
Initiative was contracted again as Sub-Sub-Recipient of
the Global Fund Round 5 TB/HIV/AIDS for the 7th quarter
activities in 4 Local Government Areas of Benue state
namely; Makurdi, Ushongo,Obi and Buruku. The
intervention activities involved advocacy, social
mobilization and sensitization on TB/HIV/AIDS prevention
and control among Out-of-School Youths, Commercial Sex
workers and general population. The 3-month project
recorded
significant milestones with firm commitment of
participants to mobilize their peers towards consistent
test and treatment of TB in DOTS centers. Also in October 2008 the
organization was contracted by the Federal Ministry of
Youth Development for the implementation of their well
conceived programme of freeing the youth from the
scourge of HIV/AIDS and Drug addiction among youths in Benue state. The programme activities which included
sensitization, HIV counseling and testing (HCT) and
community rallies were well implemented in 3 LGAs
namely Vandeikya, Ushongo and Otukpo of the state and
more than 1000 youths benefited from the programme.

partnership with Transition Monitoring Group(TMG), Women
Environmental Programme (WEP) under the joint donor
basket fund of UNDP, EU,CIDA and DFID and IFES/EVER
projects participated actively in voter mobilization and
monitoring of the April 2007 general elections in
Nigeria. The post electoral activities of the Tribunals
and INEC were also monitored and reported to the
partners. Greenwatch initiative in partnership with
Coalition for change (C4C) Abuja, Women Environmental
programme (WEP) Abuja and JDPC Ijebu Ode also
implemented the Monitoring of Virtual poverty funds
project in Benue State. The project aimed at assessing
the level of utilization of Debt relief funds in
provision of basic facilities and rural infrastructure
in Benue State.
Greenwatch Initiative is
also coordinating Development Watch Network (DWN) Benue
chapter in implementing the UNDP sponsored
“Strengthening peoples Voice for accountability in
Governance project in Nigeria”. The 4- year project
started in 2009 with implementation of the Annual Work
plan of the Benue state government on civil society
mobilization for active involvement in governance
programmes in 4 pilot LGAs. So far, 13 civil society
organizations from 4 LGAs across the state have been trained
and are fully involved in budget tracking activities in
their LGAs. In the area of peace & conflict resolution,
the Organization has worked with Network of African
Peace Builders (NAPS) and the Strategic Partnership for
Peace and Conflict Resolution in Africa (PASPA) to
resolve the Kwande Crisis of 2003 in Benue state and to
empower the rural CBOs to consolidate on the peace
through detection of early warning signals and immediate
resolution of communal crisis.
